There's another site reposting fanfic without permission, this time pulling from AO3, wattpad and a couple of other sites:

ebooks-tree.com

I've found a couple my fics there. Linkage:

Here's a post with info

Here's a discussion on FFA

And the tumblr tag might be useful for finding further infos

EDIT: So while the PDF downloads are not free and ask you to log in, the mobi downloads work without login. (And look suspiciously like AO3's mobis.)

EDIT2: It starts to look more and more like a scam page going for credit card numbers and emails/passwords than a pirate site. Maybe fanfic is just collateral damage, since they've got loads of popular published works on there as well, which seems better-suited for the scamming thing. Whatever you do, don't use real email addresses with them, and only the pen name they already know, not your real name.

Another discussion here

And more about the scam behind the page

And another writeup by an AO3 staff member

EDIT 3: Apparently they've taken everything they got from AO3 down. \o/

I'm not going to participate in Yuletide this year. Over the past few years Yuletide has become a bit of a staple for me, so this winter is definitely going to feel strange and a little sad, too. But the thing is, my creativity is currently so firmly engrossed in Büttenwarder that I don't feel like being distracted by anything else and I probably wouldn't be able to do my recipient's request justice. I've also been doing stuff throughout the year so it's not like some years where Yuletide was almost my only fannish output.

On the plus side, I got myself a card from de-bingo again. I had a lot of fun with it last year, plus I get to choose the fandom(s). :D

I got nominated by cricri to do the fanfic edition of the ALS icebucket challenge, which works the same as the regular icebucket challenge except you write a fic of characters doing the icebucket thing. I thought it would be in the spirit of the challenge to draw instead of write, so have Adsche & Brakelmann take the icebucket challenge:

Full graphics behind the cut )

I'm now supposed to nominate other people (along with fandoms and characters), but, uhm, of those who haven't been nominated already, I'm not sure who's actively producing fanworks, and in which fandoms, or who is even regularly around. I'd love to see a Cabin Pressure version, for example, and I'm looking in a particular direction, but how about anyone interested just does this for themselves, or lets me know so that I can officially nominate them, if the accountability helps getting things done? You're allowed to nominate other people once you've done this, and we're very generous with time limits. :)

Whee, I'm so excited that you're writing for me! I hope you have fun with your assignment; I don't expect you to read my mind, and I don't want you to write something you feel unenthusiastic or even uncomfortable about. Really, every fic in my teeny tiny fandoms is a win! Yuletide is for fun and the collective squee, and I'm already overjoyed that you like one of my fandoms enough to offer to write for it!

I don't have any triggers and I am very hard to squick, but I'd rather the fic does not contain (m)preg, death of canon characters, non-con involving canon characters, or overly kinky sex. (Unless it's a canon event. Everything that's canon is fair game!) Other than that, go wild!

If you've already got an idea for your fic, that's great; I can't wait to see what you come up with! :D In case you do want some inspiration, though, here's what I have to say about my fandoms:

One of the reasons I'm not buying DRM-protected stuff. You're never really owning what you're buying, but merely renting it for an indetermined amount of time (unless you de-DRM your stuff), while the prices are the same as for actual print books. It doesn't even have to be such an unfair treatment as in the case of the article, but what about when the company you bought from loses interest in that technology (maybe because there's something new and shinier), or simply ceases to exist?

rebecca2525: Abby Sciuto from NCIS with the word "geek" (Default)
Let me tell you about RubyQuest.

RubyQuest is a point-and-click sort of game that someone played with a 4chan board. They posted simple stick figure graphics and basic descriptions, and the board members could then make suggestions what the protagonist, Ruby, should do. The game is long since finished, but it makes for a very interesting read, especially the flash version someone made of the graphics and the most interesting discussions among the players.

The story itself is a very creepy and twisted horror trip. Ruby wakes up in a weird research facility without memories and tries to find her way out, meeting strange creatures on her way and getting glimpses into a bleak past.

The whole thing is also funny the way classical point-and-click adventures are when the "players" struggle to find a solution or try to get Ruby to do funny stuff, or have meta discussions about the game. I don't play much anymore these days, but reading RubyQuest reminded me how video games have their very own atmosphere.

The reason I'm telling you this is that I'm going to request RubyQuest for Yuletide. I think there's lots of room for fic, for example exploring the background (the research facility, what happened before the events of RubyQuest, the other characters), and/or playing with the style of having the player interactions along with the story itself.

The Travelling Lemon

Some brilliant fellow Cabin Pressure fans had the idea of creating a coordinated fanmail project involving a lemon, since The Travelling Lemon is one of the many games our favourite pilots like to play. So I took the lemon on a trip through north-west Germany.

I sent my yuletide story off to beta! Yay! There's one fandom I'd like to write a treat for, but I don't really have a story idea for it so far. I hope I'll at least be able to write a little something for Madness.

As for the translation interface, I've sanitised all the input, meaning that now users are prevented from putting bad data into forms. It's boring work as it's clear what it's supposed to do and how it's going to work, and it's not necessary for the general functionality, but it went smoothly.

Another big thing I did the was to move the whole interface to the new frontend code—lots of rewriting of HTML, JavaScript and automated tests. It was definitely worth it because everything looks so much prettier now while needing much less custom CSS, and the whole HTML structure and the CSS class system feel so much cleaner now. Have a screenshot:

I also fixed and cleaned up a few things. Somehow I had totally missed the excistence of button_to so far...

HTML Parser

I made some more improvements, but there are some cases where I run into issues about how the underlying HTML library handles broken HTML which is really annoying.

Translation

In order to get my cucumber tests working again, I did another round of Update all the Things--now I've updated everything except Rails. As a consequence, my Ajax calls needed fixing; might be that they weren't correct before either but worked anyway. Now all the tests run, as long as I don't use bundle exec because it won't find Resque then... But I can live with that for now.

I've finished the comments and comment notifications. Cesy's working on refactoring the archive comment code, which will make it easier to integrate the translation code into the archive. When she's done, I'll have to refactor my code in turn, but the end result will be much more modular.

Yuletide

On an unrelated note, I finished the first draft for my assignment. It's going to need lots and lots of editing, though...
