This was my first Yuletide, and where at first I was worried that I'd have to write one fic to a deadline, I ended up writing three fics! Two full-length Lewis fics (Lewis/Hathaway Gen. Yes, gen, although I totally ship these two) and a Computer Anthropomorfic treat.

A Quantum of Solace for Lalaith was my assignment. I was flailing a bit at first as I didn't feel very inspired. I didn't find the fourth season overly exciting, and going by the dwindling activity in the Lewis comm, I'm not the only one. So I re-watched the first three seasons, and boy, am I ever glad I did! All the love and excitement came back full force! I got the general idea for the fic surprisingly fast. Since it could have worked both as a friendship fic or a shippy fic, I asked the mods what my recipient would prefer; hence me writing gen ;-) I was very quick to write the first draft (well, quick by my standards), but I got stuck a little at fleshing out some parts. I'm actually glad for the pressure the deadline provided so that I had to kick myself, come up with some ideas and finish the fic; I would probably have given up much to easily otherwise. Overall, I'm satisfied with the fic.

Still head over heels in love with Lewis, the dkwilliams' prompt regarding Hathaway's opinion about homosexuality, based on the episode Life Born of Fire, kept nagging me, resulting in Simple. At first, I envisioned a longer, shippy fic surrounding that scene, but I got seriously stuck halfway through. I think to make my original idea work, I a.) should have written in Hathaway's POV, which doesn't come as easily to me as Lewis' POV and which would have changed the nature of the scene in Simple completely, and b.) would have needed quite a few thoughts about religion and Catholicism. That's probably not my story to tell. Luckily I realised that the dialogue scene between Lewis and Hathaway could stand on its own if given a new intro and conclusion. I quite like how the result turned out.

Now for something completely different: My madness treat if [ $FLAMEWAR ]; then make love; fi. I got that plot bunny as soon as I saw the fandom on the nominations list; the story practically wrote itself. Making jokes about naughty-sounding Linux commands isn't a new idea, but I've never seen fic about it. Although I love this fic, I'm surprised about its popularity; after all, the fic is very geeky and I wouldn't have thought there'd be such a large audience for that.

I've gotten the best yuletide gifts ever! EVER! *cuddles fics*

My assigned gift is a very sweet and well-written Poirot fic; besides the fact that it is a good story, it is exactly to my taste, which is just awesome! ♥ If you can get the idea of Poirot/Hastings even a little bit, you should go and read it:

Everybody Knows (Except You) (1002 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Poirot - Agatha Christie
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Hercule Poirot, Arthur Hastings, Felicity Lemon, James Japp
Summary:

Everybody comes to understand it in their own way.

I also got a charming and funny treat for Dinner for One. I didn't know at all what to expect should someone write for this, so it was an awesome surprise! Go read it!

Der 50. Geburtstag oder Dinner for Five (1790 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Der 90. Geburtstag | Dinner for One (1963)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Miss Sophie/Mr. Winterbottom, Mr. Pommeroy/Admiral von Schneider
Characters: James (Dinner for One), Miss Sophie (Dinner for One), Mr. Winterbottom (Dinner for One), Admiral von Schneider (Dinner for One), Mr. Pommeroy (Dinner for One), Sir Toby (Dinner for One)
Summary:

James has been working for Miss Sophie for two months. Now it is her 50th birthday and James is determined to make sure that everything is perfect.

(If you don't know the fandom: It's an old British comedy sketch that for some reason has aquired cult status in Germany and that is obligatory here on New Year's eve. It's on Youtube and only 15 minutes: Part 1 and Part 2.)
rebecca2525: text "yuletide treasure" in front of red fabric (yuletide)
I've posted my Yuletide story! Knowing me, I'll probably still fiddle with some of the wording in a few days, but apart from that, it's done and I think it's a decent fic.

Overall, after an initial moment of flanicking and asking the mods for a bit of specification from my recipient, things went quite smoothly. Reviewing canon and writing my fic reminded me of HOW MUCH I LOVE CANON; LOOK AT THE CHARACTERS! THE PLOT! THE SETTING! LOOK AT HOW... Why am I not allowed to talk about it!? *whines* Maybe I should write a treat for this fandom to distract myself...
rebecca2525: text "yuletide treasure" in front of red fabric (yuletide)
Got my yuletide assignment, and I have to say I'm not at all surprised about the match. Unfortunately, it's the fandom where I'm most in need for plot bunnies, but my assignment has neither a prompt nor a yuletide letter. :-( Even the other yuletide letters are mostly very vague on this fandom. Seriously, what is it with this fandom?

Well, I'm determined not to panic yet. I'm going to review the source over the next days and let my subconscious work. If that doesn't help, I can still search random fests or bingo cards for prompts.

As to my requests: Albion got no offers and no requests besides mine, but I feared as much. It is, after all, a 15 years old genre computer game which takes a while to play through. Literary RPF got 5 requests and 11 offers, but seeing that the list of characters is very long and contains a bunch of famous Anglo-American authors, I think my chances are pretty low that anyone is interested in two lesser-known German authors. Dinner for One, where I'm the only requester, has 4 offers! Whoohooo! I was quite sure that there were at least some people who'd know this, but I was afraid that it would be too WTF for anyone to actually offer. Guys, I salute you! Poirot has 5 requests and 14 offers, which makes it one of my bigger Yuletide fandoms, and I'm quite hopeful that some Poirot fic gets written, be it for me or for someone else. Yay!
rebecca2525: text "yuletide treasure" in front of red fabric (yuletide)

OMG, you are writing in one of my tiny fandoms! For me! I love you already! Please, please, please: have fun with your assignment! I don't expect you to read my mind, and I don't want you to write something you feel unenthusiastic or even uncomfortable about. Really, every fic in my teeny tiny fandoms is a win! Yuletide is for fun and the collective squee!

I don't have any triggers and I am very hard to squick, but I ask that your fic does not contain mpreg, non-canon death of canon characters, non-con involving canon characters, or overly kinky sex. Other than that, go wild!

Okay, so if you already have an idea for you fic, that's great! Stop reading this letter, forget about my request details and go write; I can't wait to see what you come up with! *g* In case you do want some inspiration, though, here's what I have to say about my fandoms:

I nominated and am definitely going to request Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Austrian writer, for Yuletide. I fear that my chances that someone is actually going to offer it are miniscule, but at least I'm having great fun re-reading his poems and doing some research. Here are some interesting resources about the homoerotic aspects of his friendships with Stefan George, Edgar Karg von Bebenburg and Georg von Franckenstein:

Hugo von Hofmannsthal in General

Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Stefan George

Hvh and Stefan George first met in 1891, when HvH had just turned 18. I've collected the poems that George and Hofmannsthal wrote with each other in mind: Mostly German behind the cut )

Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Edgar Karg von Bebenburg

  • THE CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN HUGO VON HOFMANNSTHAL AND EDGAR FREIHERR KARG VON BEBENBURG 1892–1905. TESTAMENT OF A YOUTHFUL FRIENDSHIP
  • In German, there's a variety of books covering the letters between the two
HvH and Edgar Karg von Bebenburg and met 1892, when HvH was about 18 and Bebenburg 20. Mostly German behind the cut ) And despite Bebenburg being his best friend at the time, HvH took six weeks to tell him about his engagement with Gerty Schlesinger...

Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Georg von Franckenstein

They met when Franckenstein was 15 and HvH about 20. HvH says about Franckenstein that he was something very special and graceful ("etwas sehr besonderes und anmuthiges"), and tells him in a letter "[...] so warst Du mir vom ersten Augenblick an merwürdig und wichtig" ("from the first moment, you were to me remarkable and important"). Mostly German behind the cut )

FANART-THAT-LOOKS-DRAWN-BY-A-FIVE-YEAR-OLD CONTEST.

Submissions have been revealed, but you can still enter! Do it, it's great fun! All fandoms, no skills required. It takes about 5 minutes to draw a pic, so there really is no excuse. :D
rebecca2525: Alan Shore wearing a blinking Christmal ornament on his head (christmas)
Okay, not Christmas yet, but I don't have a Yuletide icon, so Alan with his Christmas ornament will have to do. :D

In other words: ZOMG YULETIDE! Nominations are open! It's the first time I'm going to participate. In the past, the idea of having to write for a prompt, with a deadline, scared the hell out of me. It still does. But. I can do this, right? RIGHT? So I went and nominated some fandoms, and boy, am I excited! (I'm probably going to regret this when the deadline nears, but well.) Seeing that looooooong nomination list (about 2500 fandoms atm), with those teeny tiny obscure fandoms, makes me so happy! *Cuddles tiny fandoms*

This is my current nomination:

* RPF - German Literature (to get Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Stefan George in)
* Dinner for One
* In & Out
* Poirot
* Lewis
* Boston Legal Albion (PC game)

I think Lewis and Boston Legal are a safe bet, and someone will probably also nominate Poirot. So maybe I'll redo my nomination... ETA: Swapped out Boston Legal for Albion. It's not that I have no more tiny fandoms to choose from!

I love fanfiction, I love programming, I love Open Source... so of course I love the Archive of Our Own! I'm not sure if I'm going to sign up as a volunteer, mostly because I always seem to have too little time, but still I'm curious and would like to play around with the software and have a look at the sourcecode on my own. I have been poking around at the OTW websites and at the googlecode page where the project is hosted, but I can't find anything that documents how to start. I find that a bit sad, I mean, I don't need to be taken by the hand, I'm a computer scientist myself, and I really don't want to bother the developer people when I'm not seriously considering joining the team.

So, I've tried on my own, and I got at least so far as to see the front page of the archive software. :) Read more... ) Last edited 18 May 2010
