I got nominated by cricri to do the fanfic edition of the ALS icebucket challenge, which works the same as the regular icebucket challenge except you write a fic of characters doing the icebucket thing. I thought it would be in the spirit of the challenge to draw instead of write, so have Adsche & Brakelmann take the icebucket challenge:

I'm now supposed to nominate other people (along with fandoms and characters), but, uhm, of those who haven't been nominated already, I'm not sure who's actively producing fanworks, and in which fandoms, or who is even regularly around. I'd love to see a Cabin Pressure version, for example, and I'm looking in a particular direction, but how about anyone interested just does this for themselves, or lets me know so that I can officially nominate them, if the accountability helps getting things done? You're allowed to nominate other people once you've done this, and we're very generous with time limits. :)

Whee, I'm so excited that you're writing for me! I hope you have fun with your assignment; I don't expect you to read my mind, and I don't want you to write something you feel unenthusiastic or even uncomfortable about. Really, every fic in my teeny tiny fandoms is a win! Yuletide is for fun and the collective squee, and I'm already overjoyed that you like one of my fandoms enough to offer to write for it!

I don't have any triggers and I am very hard to squick, but I'd rather the fic does not contain (m)preg, death of canon characters, non-con involving canon characters, or overly kinky sex. (Unless it's a canon event. Everything that's canon is fair game!) Other than that, go wild!

If you've already got an idea for your fic, that's great; I can't wait to see what you come up with! :D In case you do want some inspiration, though, here's what I have to say about my fandoms:

One of the reasons I'm not buying DRM-protected stuff. You're never really owning what you're buying, but merely renting it for an indetermined amount of time (unless you de-DRM your stuff), while the prices are the same as for actual print books. It doesn't even have to be such an unfair treatment as in the case of the article, but what about when the company you bought from loses interest in that technology (maybe because there's something new and shinier), or simply ceases to exist?

Let me tell you about RubyQuest.

RubyQuest is a point-and-click sort of game that someone played with a 4chan board. They posted simple stick figure graphics and basic descriptions, and the board members could then make suggestions what the protagonist, Ruby, should do. The game is long since finished, but it makes for a very interesting read, especially the flash version someone made of the graphics and the most interesting discussions among the players.

The story itself is a very creepy and twisted horror trip. Ruby wakes up in a weird research facility without memories and tries to find her way out, meeting strange creatures on her way and getting glimpses into a bleak past.

The whole thing is also funny the way classical point-and-click adventures are when the "players" struggle to find a solution or try to get Ruby to do funny stuff, or have meta discussions about the game. I don't play much anymore these days, but reading RubyQuest reminded me how video games have their very own atmosphere.

The reason I'm telling you this is that I'm going to request RubyQuest for Yuletide. I think there's lots of room for fic, for example exploring the background (the research facility, what happened before the events of RubyQuest, the other characters), and/or playing with the style of having the player interactions along with the story itself.

The Travelling Lemon

Some brilliant fellow Cabin Pressure fans had the idea of creating a coordinated fanmail project involving a lemon, since The Travelling Lemon is one of the many games our favourite pilots like to play. So I took the lemon on a trip through north-west Germany.

I sent my yuletide story off to beta! Yay! There's one fandom I'd like to write a treat for, but I don't really have a story idea for it so far. I hope I'll at least be able to write a little something for Madness.

As for the translation interface, I've sanitised all the input, meaning that now users are prevented from putting bad data into forms. It's boring work as it's clear what it's supposed to do and how it's going to work, and it's not necessary for the general functionality, but it went smoothly.

Another big thing I did the was to move the whole interface to the new frontend code—lots of rewriting of HTML, JavaScript and automated tests. It was definitely worth it because everything looks so much prettier now while needing much less custom CSS, and the whole HTML structure and the CSS class system feel so much cleaner now. Have a screenshot:

I also fixed and cleaned up a few things. Somehow I had totally missed the excistence of button_to so far...

HTML Parser

I made some more improvements, but there are some cases where I run into issues about how the underlying HTML library handles broken HTML which is really annoying.

Translation

In order to get my cucumber tests working again, I did another round of Update all the Things--now I've updated everything except Rails. As a consequence, my Ajax calls needed fixing; might be that they weren't correct before either but worked anyway. Now all the tests run, as long as I don't use bundle exec because it won't find Resque then... But I can live with that for now.

I've finished the comments and comment notifications. Cesy's working on refactoring the archive comment code, which will make it easier to integrate the translation code into the archive. When she's done, I'll have to refactor my code in turn, but the end result will be much more modular.

Yuletide

On an unrelated note, I finished the first draft for my assignment. It's going to need lots and lots of editing, though...
rebecca2525: Abby Sciuto from NCIS with the word "geek" (Default)
I wanted to work some more on the comments for translations, including writing automated cucumber tests for everything. It turned out that tests that need Javascript don't work anymore. The Javascript tests are set up with Selenium which launches a real browser, in my case Firefox. The launching part still worked, but somehow Selenium couldn't communicate with FF so that the empty FF window just sat there and nothing happened.

It's been a while since I last run the Javascript tests, but my updated version of Firefox (or actually Iceweasel, which is Debian's variant of FF) seemed the most likely culprit. I updated Selenium, but that broke everything at first. After a few iterations of googling error messages, updating more of the test setup, googling new error messages, tweaking configuration files etc I'm now at a point where all the tests work again--except for the Javascript ones.

Now I'm seriously stumped. Selenium launches Firefox and I can watch the test steps unfold, so that's better than before--it's just that the tests run into the non-Javascript parts of the application and I have no idea why. Clicking through the preferences of the FF launched by Selenium shows that Javascript is enabled. WTF?

Somehow I was expecting more to come out of a mostly free sunday spent coding.

Every once in a while I resolve to post more. So far that hasn't really worked out well, as you might have noticed. Right now, I'm thinking it might be nice to write more about my coding for the AO3. So.

The past few weeks I've been working on rewriting the HTML parser from scratch and the code is now on our test archive so that testers can bang on it. I'm a bit wary about that. The problem with the parser is that it's not only about gradually enhancing it. There were cases that couldn't be handled by our current parser on principle, hence the rewrite, but it might very well turn out that there are cases which can't be handled by my approach either. And the whole inserting of linebreaks when users aren't using complete html or the fixing of common html errors is a bit of a vague target anyway since there are often several possible solutions, and you have to try for the most common or the least annoying one.

Regarding the upcoming translation interface for translating the AO3, I've now added the possibility to comment on translations. That took me longer than I had expected; I hadn't realised how involved our comments code actually is. Except for email notifications, everything seems to finally work. Next I have to think about who's going to get email notifications of top-level comments on translations. No-one? The person who created the translation? The person who last edited it? I'm going to have a look at how comments on tags are handled, and maybe ask translators if they have an opinion on that.

I'm going to nominate and request Albion for Yuletide again this year. Not sure how my chances are for getting a fill, but a girl can dream, right? Actually, Yuletide has already started working its magic, since while I poked the internet pondering my nominations, I found things! Not fanfic, because I doubt anyone has ever written an Albion fic, but still. Time for a resources post!

Albion is a computer game from the nineties. One reason I think it'd lend itself quite well for fic is that it does a great job at world building. There's tons of background information in the game if you care to talk to people, a very interesting alien race, an exotic alien planet...

Fannish things that got my attention lately:

Lewis: After all these years with phases of near-radio silence, I'm happy to notice that there has been quite a lot of activity going on lately. And what's more, Lewis fandom gets its first very own challenge thingy! Signups are now open!

Supernatural: After all these years of staying clear of Supernatural and just enjoying the wanks from the sidelines, I'm now dabbing my toes in that fandom a bit. I blame fandom_wank for introducing me to the awesomeness of Castiel and Misha Collins. I spent the last weeks watching Youtube clips, a few selected episodes, and reading fanfic. Interestingly enough, Supernatural still isn't quite my thing for various reasons, so I'm probably not going to watch much more of it, but Dean/Castiel fic makes me incredibly happy. This is a first for me; normally when I'm obsessed with fandom I'm also obsessed with canon.

Cabin Pressure: I was a bit surprised when a British radio show kept popping up in various fannish places and seemed to develop a fandom. I was even more surprised when, unrelatedly, a friend of mine gifted me with the complete episodes. When I started to listen, it all got very clear: One of the voice actors is Benedict Cumberbatch. :D But to be fair, while BC might be what makes most people check out Cabin Pressure, the show itself is just awesome; very funny, great voice actors, great characters. Personally, I've fallen in love with Roger Allam's character Douglas (Snark! Sarkasm! A++ deadpean delivery!) and his voice. I ... even bought an audio book for the sole reason that Roger Allam is narrating it...

Pirates of the Caribbean 4: Went to see the new POTC movie yesterday. I found it quite amusing and Captain Jack is his awesome self, but I have to admit I have given up expecting anything of POTC sequels long ago, so it would have been really hard to disappoint me. Fun fact: the aforementioned Roger Allam has a few lines in it. Judie Dench, too, but I only realised that when I saw her name in the end credits.

Now back to coding. GERONIMOOOOO!
